074.005 What does the word رجز mean?

وَالرُّجْزَ فَاهْجُرْ (74.5)

 

Root meaning

The word رجز can be read in two ways: either as رِجْز or رُجْز both of these words mean the same. The root meaning of the word رجز is punishment as in the following verse:

فَلَمَّا كَشَفْنا عَنْهُمُ الرِّجْزَ إِلى أَجَلٍ هُمْ بالِغُوهُ، إِذا هُمْ يَنْكُثُونَ.

But when We removed the punishment from them until a term which they were to reach, then at once they broke their word. (Surah Al-A'raf 7:135)

 

Idols were described as رجز in this verse because they lead to the punishment of those who worship them.

 

 

 

أصله العذاب

والأصل في كلمة الرجز أنها تطلق على العذاب، قال- تعالى-: فَلَمَّا كَشَفْنا عَنْهُمُ الرِّجْزَ إِلى أَجَلٍ هُمْ بالِغُوهُ، إِذا هُمْ يَنْكُثُونَ. :ط:

 وَفِيهِ لُغَتَانِ كَسْرُ الرَّاءَ وَضَمُّهَا، وَسُمِّيَ الشِّرْكُ وَعِبَادَةُ الْأَوْثَانِ رِجْزًا لِأَنَّهَا سَبَبُ الرِّجْزِ. :ف:

المراد في الآية : الأصنام والمعاصي التي تؤدي إلى العذاب

والمراد به هنا: الأصنام والأوثان، أو المعاصي والمآثم التي يؤدى اقترافها إلى العذاب.

أى: وداوم- أيها الرسول الكريم- على ما أنت عليه من ترك عبادة الأصنام والأوثان، ومن هجر المعاصي والآثام. :ط:
